Do you welcome beginners?
Yes! We welcome players of all experience levels. Games are played in a friendly, casual manner and if you aren’t sure of anything you can always ask. If you aren’t yet confident scoring your hands, another player will be able to help you.
Where and when do meetups take place?
Our home venue is Chance & Counters, a board game café in the centre of Leeds. We meet once a month; the exact day varies as we always arrange meetups at a time of mutual convenience for the greatest possible number of members, but it’s almost always on a Sunday afternoon. Dates are arranged via a poll on our Facebook group.
Will I have to pay?
We don’t charge a subscription fee to members, but our home venue charges a fee of £2 per hour per person for hiring the table.
Do I need to bring my own equipment?
If you own some then feel free to bring it along, but tiles and mats will be provided.
Do I have to live in Leeds?
No, we have regular attendees who live all around Yorkshire, as well as the North East and west of the Pennines.
Are there opportunities to play in an in-person competitive environment?
There are three competitive tournaments held per year in the UK, featuring players from across Europe. There are also annual tournaments in other European countries, as well as a European Championship and World Championship that each take place every three years. You can find further details on the official European Mahjong Association website.
